The single cylinder model is designed for fun but is capable of long distance, you just go slower, 60~75mph

The older twins are designed for long distance at slower speed than the bigger engines (cruise at 80~90mph instead of 110~120mph)

BMW doesnt appeal to the hooligan element so even used they are a good buy but may have high mileage (100,000 plus probably isnt a good idea unless you can do all your own rebuild work)

I bought a used '99 GS and am very happy with a reliable, comfortable bike that has great ergonomics and handles very well. No maintenance issues. If I could, I'd purchase a new GS having tried one lately and it is simply an amazing machine. BMW's are the best touring machines around, bar none. Do not get a 650, too small, and you'll get better value for a Japanese model at a cheaper price.
Get the bigger BMW the break in period is 25K miles, that's 24 times longer than any other machine in the world.

They are used in Europe for Police Motorcycles.
Can't go wrong with a BMW. I say go for it.
bmw=good bike
You can't go wrong with a BMW. They're like parrots; likely to outlive you.

Ok, I may exaggerate, but they are known to go the distance and keep on going. Riders tend to share a strong bond, and while the new bikes are very $$, the old bikes still get respect. Do a search on ''BMW motorcycle club'' in Google and I'll bet you'll find a group to connect with.

As for maintenance, I guess depends on the bike and your comfort level. I know a lot of riders do the work themselves, or get help through their BMW rider clubs on ''tech days''.

I am considering a BMW for my next bike in part for the durability factor. If you already have a BMW in mind, and durability is the only outstanding question, no need to hesitate.
