personally, i wouldn't get a convertible if you're looking to spend a minimal amount of money fixing a car. High chance that it will start to leak, and fixing a leak in a convertible is a real pain, and you usually end up getting frustrated and buying a new top. But the M42 motor (in the 318) is pretty resilient, so if you're willing to cope with that, then go for it. depending on the year, which you didn't list.
