the passenger door on my '83 BMW 320i is closed. i cant open it at all need help getting it open i've taken off the handle on the inside but the lock doesn't engage when i pull the lever. even on the outside when i pull the handle it doesn't engage what can i do to open it? thanks need any mmore info just ask.

The lock mechanism on the latch may be sticky. Insert the key in the lock %26 engage it a few times; at the same time try the door latch. Once you get it open then remove the door panel %26 further investigate.

The lever that locks and unlocks the door goes to the door lock mechanism. Follow the rod from the inner handle lock button or lever to the door lock assembly. You will have to get the interior panel off somehow. Find the part of the lock mechanism it moves, it will be the problem. It must engage the part of the assembly that allows the inner handle to pull the lock release lever. There may be a rod loose or a plastic retainer clip broken.

Can I trust that any non-dealer has sufficient knowlege to replace this part correctly, and How do I ensure accurate part if buying used? BMW and Volvo offer cars that are more powerful than the TSX, but they don't offer cars that are as dependable. The TSX is always on the Consumer Guide lists of best cars to own, and they hold more of their value than just about anything else. They also come very well equipped. Competitors may not be much more expensive at base price, but option up a 328i to the point where it has the luxury features of a base TSX, and the price difference is about 10 thousand dollars. My father drove new BMWs for 16 years, but as his last one needed its 3rd transmission at 60K miles, he decided to try something else. The TSX has about 50K miles now. It has never had anyting done to it. By the same age, the BMW was on transmission number 2, its dashboard had been apart twice, which made it look as shoddy as the level of engineering that necessitated it, and it was getting to be expensive and time consuming to keep on the road. The TSX also gets great mileage, better than my 2007 Civic Si sedan. It isn't the best car for posers, but it offers the bet ride and handling balance in its class and a great ownership experience.

I think DSP is just an upgraded amplifier option that gives certain simulated surround effects (like concert hall, theatre). Other than that the speakers may not be considered BMW top-hifi, but they won't sound much different from the upgraded system.

You certainly can. Your X5 is out of its factory warranty by two years and 19,000 miles but you have two options for extended warranty. One is through BMW. At any rate, your car has a computer... simply call around to a parts store and most will have a diagnotics device which will interface with your car and tell you exactly what error is causing your airbag light to come on. If it's not smog related (which, with BMW, who knows...) then it PROBABLY won't cause any issues with registration/smogging.

Re: The BMW 3 series hard top. Well .. I would say .. ABSOLUTELY .. Hardtop convertibles are AWESOME. I test drove this car and it moves unbelievably and great control. I added about every option possible, not including active cruise control and it prices around 62,000.00 But, the base price is 50,000. Also, it is NOT easy to get from what I am finding. I am having to wait a couple months and ordered it with all options I wanted. But, as far as having them ON THE LOT at dealerships, everything in my area is SOLD OUT. They have a demo, which cannot be sold before ONE year. I have had the Mercedes 320 SLK hard top, and did test drive quite a few other models: Lexus, Acura etc .. and nothing drove like this car. I sure loved it .. :)

in the old days when they used to produce planes they used to number the planes like they do today it has just evolved onto the cars ie:- 7 denotes the class of vehicle and the 40 denotes the engine size and the L is the level of trim

The only addition to his comment is that the engine size (displacement) is not always exact. So a 330i may have a 2.8 litre engine vs exactly a 3.0 litre.
First number is series, ie 3 series, 5 series, 7 series etc. Second and thrid denote engine size, e.g. a 540 has a 4 liter engine, a 330 has a 3 liter engine. Sometimes the numbers don't quite match the engine size for aesthetic reasons, they wouldn't badge a car 531 if it had a 3.1 liter engine.

My vote is for the 328i in the E46 Chassis (2000-2006.) Granted that is what I drive, but I haven't had any problems at all, I mean at all, I just hit 91,000 miles and I haven't had any major service or mechanical qualms. I have driven many, many BMWs and for the most part, they are very reliable, durable machines.

Now, my 1993 (E36) 325i, I was not kind to it. Smoking burnouts, high speed turns, off-camber turns, occasional overevving, sliding and skidding, drifting at times, even a few spinouts and there wasn't anything wrong with the car (besides the driver) even at 162,500 miles.

Although I have been nicer to this E46 328i, winter in Michigan is the season of the drift and slide. I've managed to slide off the road only once (DSC was off, for the record) on a particularly icy day and the car was fine, I was able to even drive it out the ditch.

The 328i is the sportiest of all the E46s, even the 330i (except the E46 330i ZHP, which gave it a good run for sport-factor.) It really is an amazing vehicle. Only recently have I modified it with aftermarket parts and now the thing is almost an M-killer.

My suggestions are as follows:

you will no doubt get varying answers on this, but heres my take. german cars are very high quality. they are capable of several hundred thousand miles if properly maintained. parts are expensive. labor is expensive. would i buy one from an auction or used lot? probably not. does your best friends grandmother have a 3 series with 130k on it and all dealer maintenance receipts? jump on it. otherwise, get a honda.

Well it depends if the car got the regular matainance done on it and had it checked from time to time. As far as I know Bmw are pretty good. If you have to do a lot of mantainance screw it. save yourself a bunch a money and buy a jap car. They got more bang for the buck !
Parts are hard to come by, and are expensive. I am not even sure BWM makes parts beyond 10yrs, so the parts may all be aftermarket. While they are very capable and well made cars, they also tend to have been driven hard and not properly maintained. The 7-series in particular have proven to be troublesome. And overall any BMW is prone to have electrical issues at this age. You could get the same model year Lexus and not have the same worries on repairs as they are darn near bulletproof (especially the LS400).

Its a great car, Rare options such as Factory GPS Navigation, and the Ski Sack. New Brakes all the way around, and in very nice condition. 150,000 miles. The car was gifted to me and im wondering how much i could get for it in a sale. And how much you think a very base model of a 2002 BMW 325i is? make sure it is warranted, you know what you have, with more room in it... (3 series are smaller) but you don't know what you are getting.... plus if they are so cheap why do you think that is? poor dependability, costly repairs etc, check consumer reports....

I would keep the 97 and lower the insurance to bare min. liability and just have two for awhile until you see the 02 is alright and then sell the 97... if you must buy.

personally i thank you should keep the 540. it still looks good, and has more power then the 325. and is alot roomier. i have two 530's one black one silver one 01 and one 03 both have 90,000 miles on them. great cars. i have never had a proble witht them yet. Run like champs. I have a friend that has a 2001 325 and i had to drive it for a day and i hated it. too small not enough power, although it did look nice. I don't know how old you are but if your going to get a 3 series the only two worth getting is an m3 or a 330. stick with the 540. If you ever wanted to spice it up change out the front and rear bumpers and put HID headlights and fog lights in it will look great. And as a gift i'd take it. Way better then the 325 although it the 325 will have less miles... Right??? i say it will have around 60000 at least. dude its up to you. they are both great cars. i have a BMW and land rover shop and we've seen it all...

Go for the Beamer! I have a 2003 325i, and its been flawless. I have heard of electrical problems, but I think they run in the 5 series. I've never had a problem, nor have 2 of my colleagues who have the same car. Also, BMW pays for all maintenance and service -I think up to 4 years/50,000 miles, so you can be pretty sure the car was probably taken good care of. The Infiniti is nice, but the BMW ride (pick-up, sharp handling) is far superior. Also, the BMW will retain a higher value, once you go to trade or sell in the future.

They do pretty well if they are good. I think they make more per hour than mechanics for American cars. It's all about how good you are. You get paid an hourly wage based on what the ''book'' says about a job. If the book says a tuneup takes 3 hours then you get paid for 3 hours of work regardless of how long it took. If you can do it in 1.5 hours, then you can do 2 in 3 hours and get paid for 6 hours of work.

definitely sounds like your thermostat is bad.
It could be be your temperature sensor sending unit.This sensor has a internal resistance that changes with the coolant temperature up or down, have it checked with a digital ohm meter, if out of specs, replace. Hope this helps.
additionally, see if the engine feels warmer (Just put your hand over it like you would over a fire, feel the warmth coming off the engine surface) if it feels warmer than it usually does, then the coolant's not circulating ...
check the oil, if its fine then the gauge might be up the creek

However BMW M5 and BMW M6 are its most powerful vehicles in production at the moment. With speed limiters removed (limited at approx 155mph) they can achieve speeds over 200 miles an hour. They both share high reving 5000cc v10 engines reversed engineered from formula one cars, same applies to thier 7 speed auto clutch gearbox.

But never fear!

Word is that there is a so called 'Z10' on the way which will share this engine however it will not be the heavy saloon car the m5 is, but instead a light 2 seater super car which could be comparable to the Ferrari F430 or Lamborghini Gallardo!

I wouldn't really do it if you want a car that is cheap to run. BMW's have pretty high maintenance costs. The $2000 brake job or transmission repair is not atypical. These are great lease cars or even new purchases because they come with warranty and free maintenance. Otherwise, I'd be careful.

IF the previous buyer took good care of maintaining the engine/suspension/transmission/etc and you continue to do so, it should last you that long...if it's not a big deal to you, engine swap for a lower mi. engine (look @ junkyards or get the engine from a well known company...that's wat i do)

if you're talking about the emblems on the hood or trunk, they are held on by two grommets on the back. you can use dental floss and slip it underneath the emblem, wrap it around a few times, and pull.

We have a BMW and the fuel pump went yesterday yet we never drive it poorly nor do we put low grade gas in it except a few times recently. it's possible that you consisently let your gas tank get too low before you fill up again. most of us do this . . . we wait until the gas tank is almost empty and then we fill up. this causes little particles at the bottom of your gas tank to get caught up in the fuel pump. it gets clogged, slows down, and eventually dies. sometimes if you know where the fuel pump is located, and you bang on it directly, it might give it some more life. it's happened to me with just about every car i've owned (because i usually wait until i am running on fumes before i go to the gas station). fuel pumps go bad . . . some as early as 50,000 miles. the best thing to do going forward would be to fill up when you hit 1/4 tank instead of empty. (easier said than done).

Some of the BMW's have a problem with the fuel pump and changing the fuel even for a tank full can sometimes bring on problems. With out getting to technical the cheaper fuel will have different octane boosting additives than the higher priced product And this can result in premature failure. BMW don't actually make the pump - they are made by an other company

personally, i wouldn't get a convertible if you're looking to spend a minimal amount of money fixing a car. High chance that it will start to leak, and fixing a leak in a convertible is a real pain, and you usually end up getting frustrated and buying a new top. But the M42 motor (in the 318) is pretty resilient, so if you're willing to cope with that, then go for it. depending on the year, which you didn't list.

I have a 1999 E46 323i and I mine is also the front drivers side also. BMW doesn't care about the ''little things'' that go wrong. I'm sure your window bracket is exactly the same model as the one in my car (7 years newer). My Signal bulbs (all 4 corners) always blow out and when I ask them why, BMW told me they never addressed the problem and it is one of those minor inconvinience that you have to deal with when you buy a BMW. Bought new: 2001 - 320i; 2004 - 330i Sport got rid of this one within the first 3 weeks.

Secondhand: 2002 - 318i Sport sold it within a year due to breakdowns; 2002 - 530d x2 The first diesel was brilliant the second one was a dud; 2003 -735i (this one literally spent half of the time I`ve owned it in the BMW dealer`s workshops).

Still own a 635csi of 1981 vintage (obviously no motorplan but in mint condition).

They all (except the 635) gave me loads and loads of problems - New and secondhand. My advice to you is not to even think of owning a secondhand BMW if the Motor plan expired on that vehicle.

I have been the owner of 37 vehicles to date. All for normal private use. The ones that gave me the most hassles - most UNreliable were VW`s, Audi`s and the BMW`s.

There is a point in any man`s life where reliability gets more important than driving pleasure - specially when your expensive German Status toy are parked on the back of a tow-in truck.

It`s Japanese toys that I park these days in my garage.

My experience: BMW workshops don't employ mechanics anymore - they are all part fitters. Very few BMW mechanics can do any fault finding diagnostics without the BMW Fault finding analyzing computer. If the computer cant diagnose the problem, the factory rep must be called in etc.

Love my Mercedes 350 Sport. It's a real head turner. We bought ours in September, and I have to say we got raped for our trade in. I just read this am that car dealers are literally giving away cars. That may be true, but getting rid of the 325 might be a challenge. I suggest dumping the BMW yourself instead of letting them repair their margins at your expense.

Also, another interesting thing, we have been long time (Starmark - used) Mercedes owners. The warranties are amazing and free rental cars when you get service. The new car, however, we didn't get squat. Might be bcuz my husband wanted this car the week it was released...

the SLK you lose practicality and some hp cuz the SLK only has 184 brake hp from 215 in the bmw. The SLK will be a more enjoyable car to have if you can live without the convienience. I hate to say it, since Audi's look so cool to me. But, Audi's (and VW since Audi is made by VW) have a bad reputation when it comes to reliability.
hmmm, BMW has a really cool look, and if you don't like the TT you can go for the A4 cabriolet but doesn't have enough power. The BMW has more power, V6, and A4 has like V4 unless you upgrade to a V6, but I still think the BMW is more powerful. The BMW has better stuff, and looks a lot fancier. The Bmw has a hardtop when I belive the A4 has the softtop.

Not to sure how the laws are there, but if you arent the owner of the vehicle you will not be able to obtain insurance on the vehicle as you have no financial interest in it. Your friend will need to obtain the insurance himself and let his ins co. know that he has a friend driving it.

2007 X3 3.0si Zero problems so far.

2004 325i Head unit wouldn't eject CD. Passenger side remote side view mirror stopped working. Both repaired under warranty. A great car.

1996 318ti. Engine seized at 146,000 miles after my daughter drove it 30 minutes at 70+mph with no coolant. (radiator cap was leaking) Car would still be running today if she had looked at the temp gauge or warning lights.

1990 535i. Lots of small things wore out over the years but the car still ran great when I sold it last year. 250,000 miles!

2002 BMW 325i. Wouldn't start. Had to remove fuel injectors and clean them out. The problem probably was the quality of the fuel that I filled the tank up with. I believe it was a blended premium grade. Back to buying Exxon premium now, and it's fine.

2003 BMW 325xi- 21,000 Miles, Blinker Malfunction (front blinker would blink very fast for a while) 39,000 miles, Steering Column was Cracked, 63,000 miles, Ceiling Insulation and Sunroof were rubbing (Repair would cost around $1500) I just sold the car like that.
I have a 2004 BMW X3 and it is getting to the age where I am beginning to have minor problems with it. The most serious by far is that I have had to have the air bag sensor in the front passenger seat replaced, and it looks like I will have to have it replaced again. My sunroof came off the track and I had issues with water leaking into the floorboard in the front. The rain sensing windsheild wipers don't always sense the rain the way they should and the cup holder broke. I did get an extended maintenance plan so I have paid for none of this. Other than those things, everything has been pretty good.

Replaced Radiator and air pump at 129,000 miles due to component failure....

Other than that, problem free.

Your car has 194 HP in Euro trim, in US trim it's 184. There is a small difference in the way it is measured, and usually a small difference due to the emissions requirements of the vehicles. The 170 you refer to is the HP of a 323 from the previous model year and before.

Please always include the country you are referring to. These cars are around the globe, and each country has slight differences.

Heck no... it wont be 12,000 for long because it will start having mechanical issues and you will pay big bucks for repair and mantinance.... Seriously... It isn't worth it. I bought mine, it was new and after about a year I started having issues with the cooling and brakes. Also the steering wheel.
12k seeems pretty low for a 330i with 80k, especially from a dealer. ask to see the records to make sure the vehicle does not have a shady past. it might be a re-titled major repair subject. major repair costs might be imminent.

I have owned my BMW 325i for nearly 2 years. It is an excellent car - however, everything has to be done through the dealership - even coolant is 'special' and has to be purchased through them. I have lived in a couple of different cities and services (basic oil change/fluid fill) run on average about $120 every 10K miles. Your major servicings will run on average about $450. I had to replace a cam shaft sensor 2 weeks ago that cost $430. And BMW's that are newer have had trouble with the light sockets getting moisture in them and going out. Both dealerships have replaced those for $11....a huge savings compared to the $45 it would've cost for them each time they go out. The car is great--quiet, nice drive, I really can't complain. Just make sure that you know what you're getting into and that you're near a dealership.

I've learned that compact's supposed to be an affordable version of 3series SE but how does it really compare?

personally i think 3 series compact does look sportier though front lights look probably less stylish.

i'm still in mid twenties and i will not be riding with more than 1passenger regularly so I'm still thinking if i should go for sporty lookin compact or conventional looking SE.

In terms of running costs there will be no real difference between a Compact and a saloon/coupe model with the same engine size. However, the Compact doesn't drive as well because it uses the rear suspension from a much older 3-sreies. I'd go with the coupe shape, if you can afford the extra, as they usually cost more.
I guess you're in Europe...does a compact mean it's a hatch or is it like the coupe version we get here? If it's the coupe version get it, if it's the hatch...forget it.
The compact does not compare to a full-size BMW. Get the sedan, the compact is a girls car.
What you want it the coupe great looking and if you get the 318 it should not be too bad on fuel if you do not care about fuel and stuff go for the 325 great engine and lots of go! The compact is nice but to me that just seems pointless because why not just get a golf GTi which is a much better car. The coupe is a great choice try and ask the dealer if he can put m-sport alloys on for your they look great on the car.

BMW 330i will win. 330i is a RWD, and Saab 93 is FWD. Also 330i is more balanced than most cars out there. Unless the Saab has modification, since all turbo car is under-performed while in production.

Are you talking about the e60? Check with the dealer...

It shouldn't really be a problem, but the e60 has many sensors that give many problems.I have a e39 and theres never any problem to put any size of rims. Why not get other wheels, the m5's are way to big for a regular 5 series. Try to get some 18's, those should work. But just to be sure, just stop by your local dealer and ask. good luck

I'm considering a used vehicle under 23k. I can get a 06 Honda Civic SI with hardly any miles or a 04-05 BMW 3 series with around 23k miles on it. The Civic would be standard and auto for the Bimmer to keep in that price range. Any opinions on the two as a comparison?

I know when I was looking at cars the last time ('way back in the last century) I drove a lot of cars, and then I drove a BMW. There was simply no comparison. If you enjoy driving -- even at less than breakneck speeds -- BMWs are superb cars.

However... yes, they do cost more than a Civic to maintain, unless you get extremely lucky, and the car you are looking at almost certainly gets poorer gas mileage than a Honda. A Civic may also have more space inside, so depending on your habits and hobbies, that may be a consideration. Only a great sadist makes a tall person ride in the back of a 3-series.

I would take a look at your financial situation, and what you need to use a car for, and way those in your mind. If the Civic isn't the clear winner, go to a BMW dealership and take out any three series for a spin.

Of course, that means you'll buy the BMW. 8*)

I would go with Civic SI because of manual transmission. BMW 3 series are usually abused cars. With auto-transmission, don't expect the tranny to last over 100K. Your chances are better if you go with 5 series or 7 series. Even if car is not abused, these ZF auto tranny don't last as long. I've seen many of these fail around 150K miles, and they are pain in the butt to replace.

I got back from a 2 week vacation and found the battery on my BMW 325Ci was down due to the radar detector I forgot to unplug before leaving. I tried to jumstart it myself but was unsuccesful. So, I called AAA and had someone come out with the battery pack. The guy attached the battery and asked me to turn the key - all electricals started functioning as normal (previously lights, etc were dim) - but the car still would not start. He then attached another battery (in parallel I believe) but it still would not start - so he gave up and left. 2 hours later, I found the car to be completely dead - no electricals working, no lights on the dashboard when I turn on the ignition, nothing! Did the fuse burn out?

Buy a new battery. Put it in, connect it up, leave it for 10 minutes. (take the key out). This would charge up the capacitors in the ECU, dash and other systems.

1997-2000 BMW m5 wide body kit?

Where could I find a wide body kit for a BMW m5 any year from 1997 to 2000?

That means wider finders, side skirts, and bumpers are just wider finders anything would do. I鈥檝e looked for it for weeks now and I need help finding it .Nopi is coming up soon in Atlanta so I need it ASAP. Any help will be appreciated.

Is a BMW Z3 a girly car???

Seriously, cars that tend to be liked/driven by women are things like VW Beetle, Toyota Celica...etc

But then again, there're women who swear by their pickup truck!

I think the Z3 is a great BMW, and in my opinion, nicer looking than the Z4. I can't explain it, it's just the design. But I don't feel neither are necessarily ''girly cars'' just because they are small roadsters. Here's why...

People who buy the Z3/Z4 are people who love to drive and feel the road; these cars give a firmer ride than other cars. The steering wheel gives excellent feedback and feels heavier than most cars. The exhaust notes are also tuned to give a throatier sound (I know at least in the Z4).

Women generally (and I'm making a general statement of course) prefer a softer more comfortable riding car if they can afford it. So for the price of a Z3 3.0 back then (2001 @ $38,545 base MSRP), the car that is at the same price range that is probably more favored by the ladies (but not necessarily ''girly'') could be an RX300, Mercedes-Benz C class, Infinity I30, and many other choices. But there're of course exceptions... and those are the kind of women I like!

Most BMWs made after 2001 have ''follow me home'' lights. When the car is turned off and the key is removed you can hit your lights, like you're flashing your brights, and the low beams will turn on and remain on for about 30 seconds. This way you can light your path from your driveway to your front door. You can also have the function programmed into your key and activate it by one of the buttons. You can also have which lights come on, high or low beams, programmed by the dealer.

Cruise control: As far as I know the cruise control works the same in both auto %26 manual transmissions. Motorcycles have cruise control as well. The cruise control keeps a constant speed, it doesn't matter how you got to that speed, either by manually shifting or with an automatic transmission.

To add a little, the cruise is activated by the driver at the desired speed. The cruise control in a manual cannot shift gears like in an automatic when you push the accelerate button. It will still accelerate but only at the speed that the gear will allow.

On a manual if you hit the brake, clutch, or off button the cruise is disengaged.
