Why is BMW less expensive than Mercedes-benz?

Specifically why is the BMW 7 Series less expensive than that Mercedes S Class?

The S-Class is the benchmark sedan in all areas. When you are on the budget of this type, paying the extra 10k is practically nothing. This is not saying the 7-Series is a bad car, the Benz is just better. If you take a the 3-Series over the C-Class, it will cost more because the 3-Series is more popular and a much better car. I would like to point out a mistake written in the first answer. BMW does not use lesser quality materials, it is usually better, specifically in the Z4 over the SLK, the 6-Series over the SL, the X5 over the GL.

its because Mercedes-Benz has a ''right'' for higher prices because they are pioneers. so basically, its just a name thing. but BMW are now better.
The S class has been re-designed recently, and is bigger, more technologically advanced, and comes available with AWD. The 7 series is ending it's current life cycle this year. So right now, a 7 is inexpensive comparatively, given the support by bmw to get them out the door.

You can be sure that the new 2009 7 series, will have awd, all the new goodies, run circles around the new S and cost around the same.

So to answer your question, bmw is not less expensive than mercedes, they are around the same, it all depends on the deals the mfg is offering.
Prestige. Build quality. Quality of materials used.
I would completely have to disagree with Austin... I think BMW are built better than Mercedes. As far as why they're priced lower... I haven't checked prices lately, but I always thought they were priced near the same.

Well, I guess if you are looking at buying a BMW 7 series then everything works out!
